Horn and East Africa — Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

  • The first LEGS Regional Training of Trainers course covered the Horn and East Africa, and took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in April 2010.
  • 21 participants joined the training, from Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Somaliland, South Sudan, north Sudan and Uganda.
  • The trainers were Cathy Watson, LEGS Coordinator and Sphere training specialist, Polly Bodgener.

South-East Asia — Phnom Penh, Cambodia

  • The second regional LEGS TOT took place from 30th May to 4th June, 2010 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, covering the South-East Asia region. Sixteen participants attended the six day event, from Cambodia, Bhutan, Indonesia, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Thailand, Timor Este, and Vietnam. The training was carried out by two members of the LEGS TOT training team: David Hadrill and Ana Urgoiti Aristegui.

Horn and East Africa — Nairobi, Kenya

  • The Third Regional LEGS TOT training took place in Nairobi from 25th-30thJuly 2010. This was the second training in this region, held in response to the very high demand from applicants to attend the first TOT.
  • A total of 24 participants from Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, attended the six day course.
  • The training was carried out by Tim Leyland and Polly Bodgener.

South Asia — Kathmandu, Nepal

  • The fourth regional LEGS TOT training took place in Kathmandu between 2ndand 7th August 2010, covering the South Asia region. Participants came from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the UK, and numbered 15 in total. The training was carried out by Tim Leyland and Ana Urgoiti Aristegui.

LEGS learning has given an opportunity to create synergies within different organizations in same region, who are working on emergency responses affected by humanitarian crises. Moreover, this tool supports us to identify the most appropriate livestock intervention in emergencies, and provides us standards, indicators and guidance notes for these interventions based on good practice.’

West Africa (francophone) — Dakar, Senegal

  • This training took place (in French) in Dakar, Senegal from 26thSeptember to 1st October 2010.
  • Participants were 17 people, from: Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, (Kenya), Mali, Niger, and Senegal.
  • The LEGS trainers were Sylvie Robert and David Hadrill, with Nacif Rihani from FAO providing additional technical support.
  • The TOT was officially opened by José Luis Fernandez, FAO West Africa Regional Emergency Coordinator.

Southern Africa — Johannesburg, South Africa

  • This training took place in Johannesburg from 17th – 22ndOctober 2010.
  • The LEGS trainers were David Hadrill and Emma Jowett.
  • There were 17 participants from: Botswana, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe, (Ethiopia, Kenya, UK).

South Asia — Islamabad, Pakistan

  • This training took place in Islamabad from 2nd – 6thMay, 2011.
  • The LEGS trainers were Tim Leyland and Emma Jowett.
  • There were 13 participants from: Pakistan and Afghanistan.

West Africa (anglophone) — Accra, Ghana

  • This training took place in Accra from 22nd – 27th May 2011.
  • The LEGS trainers were Tim Leyland and Emma Jowett.
  • There were 12 participants from: Ghana, Sudan, Switzerland, Nigeria, Tanzania, Niger and Sierra Leone.

South-East Asia — Manila, Philippines

  • This training took place in Manila from 29 January – 3rd February, 2012.
  • The LEGS trainers were Polly Bodgener and David Hadrill.
  • There were 18 participants from: India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Philippines.

Central America — Mexico

  • This training took place in Mexico from 6th – 11th February, 2012.
  • The LEGS trainers were Ana Urgoiti Aristegui and Einstein Tejada.
  • There were 12 participants from: Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

Central Africa — Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

  • This training took place in Addis Abeba from 13th– 18th May, 2012.
  • The LEGS trainers were Sylvie Robert, David Hadrill and Louis-Philippe Aka.
  • There were 14 participants from: Tunisia, Benin, Burundi, Cameroun, Niger, Rd Congo, Gabon and Djibouti.

Central America — Panama

  • This training took place in Panama from 13th – 18thAugust, 2012.
  • The LEGS trainers were Ana Urgoiti Aristegui and Einstein Tejada.
  • There were 14 participants from: Nicaragua, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala , Honduras, Panama and Bolivia.

Northern Africa — Hammamet, Tunisia

  • This training took place in Hammameth from 9th – 14thDecember, 2012.
  • The LEGS trainers were Sylvie Robert and David Hadrill.
  • There were 22 participants from: Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, Morocco, Chad, Djibouti, Mali and Italy.

Mongolia — Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

  • This training took place in Ulaanbaatar from 16th – 21st June, 2013.
  • The LEGS trainers were Emma Jowett, David Hadrill and Ashish Sutar.
  • There were 14 participants from: Mongolia and S. Korea.

South America — Bogota, Colombia

  • This training took place in Bogota from 12th – 17thAugust, 2013.
  • The LEGS trainers were Ana Urgoiti Aristegui and Einstein Tejada.
  • There were 24 participants from: Colombia, Bolivia, and Brazil.

Middle East — Istanbul, Turkey

  • This training took place in Istanbul from 8th – 13th November, 2013.
  • The LEGS trainers were Polly Bodgener and David Hadrill.
  • There were 21 participants from: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Geneva, Bangladesh, Jordan, Sudan, Iran, Lebanon, Uganda, Mauritania, Swaziland and Oman.

Caribbean — Kingston, Jamaica

  • This training took place in Kingston from 12th – 17th May , 2014.
  • The LEGS trainers were Emma Jowett and Tim Leyland.
  • There were 18 participants from: Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, Kenya, Grenada, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Nicaragua and Suriname.

West Africa — Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

  • This training took place in Ouagadougou from 12th – 17th April, 2015 and was supported by the USAID Technical and Operational Performance Support (TOPS) Program.
  • The LEGS trainers were Claire Boulanger and David Hadrill.
  • There were 19 participants from: Burkina, Niger, Senegal, Mali, Chad, CAR and Togo.

South Asia — Pakistan

  • This training took place in Islamabad from 11th– 16th January, 2016.
  • The LEGS trainers were Polly Bodgener and David Hadrill.
  • There were 25 participants from: Pakistan.

  • This training took place in Bangkok from 26th September – 1st October, 2016.

  • There were 16 participants from: Ethiopia, Kenya, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Mongolia, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sudan and Iran.

LEGS Handbook

The LEGS Handbook

The LEGS Handbook provides standards and guidelines for appropriate and timely livestock-based livelihoods responses in emergencies, using a participatory and evidence-based approach. The Handbook was produced through a broad consultation process, drawing on good practice worldwide. The LEGS Handbook is a companion to the Sphere Handbook.
