In a significant step towards enhancing disaster response in the livestock sector, LEGS Core Training was successfully conducted in three key locations across Honduras – Catacamas, Danlí and Trojes – in late 2024. Organized by COPECO (Honduras’ national disaster risk management agency) and Brooke, these training courses aimed to equip professionals and local stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to integrate livestock support into emergency response efforts.

Building resilience for livestock and communities

Each three-day LEGS Core Training course brought together participants from municipal emergency committees (CODEM), as well as local government officials, NGOs, farmers, students, and technical experts. The courses were designed to improve understanding of LEGS principles, ensuring livestock – critical to many livelihoods in Honduras – are considered in disaster-response planning.

The courses, held in September, November, and December 2024, covered topics such as:

  • The role of livestock in humanitarian response
  • Identifying and implementing appropriate interventions
  • Emergency planning and response strategies
  • Practical applications for local disaster preparedness

Key outcomes and feedback

Participants overwhelmingly rated the trainings as highly beneficial, with many emphasising the importance of including livestock in emergency response frameworks. Across all three locations, evaluations showed that most attendees found the content relevant to their work, particularly in improving livestock support during crises.

A growing commitment to livestock protection in emergencies

As Honduras continues to face climate-related challenges, the LEGS training represents a proactive step in strengthening local and national emergency preparedness. By equipping key stakeholders with these skills, the country is better-positioned to safeguard the livelihoods of livestock-dependent communities in times of crisis.

With strong interest in further training and expansion, LEGS and its partners remain committed to fostering resilience and promoting best practices for livestock management in disaster scenarios.
