To support high-quality training in livestock-based emergency response, LEGS is providing open access to its Core Training.

Since 2010, LEGS Core Training has been delivered in person across Africa, Asia and Latin America, reaching more than 12,000 participants. The release of these materials online strengthens this global effort by making the structured training resources more widely available.

Who is the LEGS Core Training for?

The in-person LEGS Core Training is designed to build the capacity of both livestock experts and humanitarian specialists involved in planning and implementing livestock-based emergency responses. The LEGS approach and LEGS Core Training enables these groups to work together to design timely and appropriate interventions.

What does the Core Training materials include?

The LEGS Core Training materials are designed for accredited LEGS Trainers to deliver in-person courses and workshops, but they are also useful for individual study. The package includes three days’ worth of structured content and is flexible in design – allowing it to be delivered as a full course, reformulated for shorter workshops, or integrated into broader initiatives such as humanitarian or veterinary degree programmes.

Accreditation and training

To be recognised as an accredited LEGS Training course, training must be delivered by a LEGS Trainer (a list of accredited trainers is available online).

To become an accredited LEGS Trainer, applicants must:

  • demonstrate relevant skills and experience
  • complete a LEGS Training of Trainers (TOT) course
  • deliver two courses within two years of completing the TOT.

Further information on organising a LEGS Core Training course, as well as access to download the materials, is available online.
