Kenya formally adopts LEGS through NDMA as national focal point

By 27th May 2025News

In a major step forward for LEGS institutionalisation, the Kenya National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) has been officially approved by its Board as the country’s institutional focal point for LEGS. This decision, taken during the 47th NDMA Board meeting in March 2025, marks the culmination of several years of collaboration and advocacy. It formalises NDMA’s leadership role in coordinating LEGS-based approaches to livestock emergency response at both national and county levels, under clearly defined Terms of Reference. Kenya now joins a group of countries where LEGS has been formally adopted within government structures. NDMA’s active engagement in LEGS training, coordination, and dissemination since 2022 demonstrates how national authorities can champion livestock emergency standards in drought-prone regions.
